How To Install A Sink Drain

Installing a sink drain is a relatively simple plumbing task that can be completed in a few hours. By following these steps, you can save yourself the cost of hiring a plumber.

Tools and Materials

Before you begin, gather the following tools and materials:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Channel locks
  • Plumber's putty
  • New sink drain
  • Basin wrench
  • Bucket
  • Flashlight

Step 1: Remove the Old Drain

Place the bucket under the sink to catch any water that may leak out. Use the adjustable wrench to loosen the slip nut that holds the old drain in place. Once the slip nut is loose, use your hands to unscrew the drain from the sink.

Step 2: Clean the Drain Hole

Use a flashlight to inspect the drain hole for any debris or old sealant. Use a wet rag to clean the area around the drain hole.

Step 3: Apply Plumber's Putty

Roll out a rope of plumber's putty and place it around the base of the new drain. The putty will help to create a watertight seal between the drain and the sink.

Step 4: Install the New Drain

Insert the new drain into the drain hole. Tighten the slip nut by hand until it is snug. Use the adjustable wrench to further tighten the slip nut, but do not overtighten it.

Step 5: Connect the Drain to the P-Trap

Use the channel locks to loosen the nuts that connect the drain to the P-trap. Remove the old drain and insert the new drain. Tighten the nuts until they are snug.

Step 6: Test the Drain

Turn on the water and check for any leaks. If you see any leaks, tighten the slip nut or the nuts that connect the drain to the P-trap.

Tips

Here are a few tips to make the installation process go more smoothly:

  • If you have a double sink, you will need to install two drains.
  • Be careful not to overtighten the slip nut or the nuts that connect the drain to the P-trap.
  • If you are having trouble loosening the slip nut, you can try using a penetrating oil.
  • If you are not comfortable working with plumbing, you can always hire a plumber to install the sink drain for you.
