How To Fix A Backed Up Sink

A backed-up sink is a common household problem that can be easily fixed in most cases. If your sink is draining slowly or not draining at all, there are a few simple steps you can follow to clear the clog and get your sink working properly again.

Before you start, gather a few tools and materials that you may need:

  • Plunger
  • Baking soda
  • Vinegar
  • Drain snake
  • Bucket

Once you have your tools and materials, follow these steps to unclog your sink:

  1. Start by plunging the sink. This is the most common way to clear a clog. Place the plunger over the drain and push and pull vigorously for 15-20 seconds. If the clog is not cleared, repeat the process several times.
  2. If plunging doesn't work, try using a baking soda and vinegar solution. Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by 1/2 cup of vinegar. Allow the solution to sit for 15-20 minutes, then flush the drain with hot water.
  3. If the baking soda and vinegar solution doesn't work, try using a drain snake. A drain snake is a long, flexible tool that can be inserted into the drain to break up clogs. Feed the drain snake into the drain and turn it clockwise until you feel resistance. Once you feel resistance, pull the drain snake back and forth to break up the clog. Repeat the process until the clog is cleared.
  4. If the drain snake doesn't work, you may need to call a plumber. A plumber will have the tools and experience to clear even the most stubborn clogs.

Here are some additional tips for preventing clogged sinks:

  • Don't pour grease or fat down the drain. Grease and fat can solidify and clog your drain.
  • Use a drain strainer to catch hair and other debris. This will help prevent clogs from forming.
  • Run hot water down the drain regularly. This will help to keep your drain clear.
  • If you have a garbage disposal, run it regularly with cold water. This will help to keep the disposal clean and free of clogs.

By following these tips, you can help to keep your sink draining properly and avoid costly plumbing repairs.
