How To Change Out A Bathroom Sink Faucet

If your bathroom sink faucet is leaking, dripping, or simply outdated, it's time to replace it. Replacing a bathroom sink faucet is a relatively simple plumbing project that can be completed in a few hours. Here are the steps on how to do it:

1. Gather your tools and materials

You will need the following tools and materials to replace your bathroom sink faucet:

  • New bathroom sink faucet
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • Plumber's putty
  • Bucket
  • Rags

2. Turn off the water supply

Before you begin working on the faucet, you need to turn off the water supply. There will be two shutoff valves under the sink, one for the hot water and one for the cold water. Turn both valves clockwise to turn off the water.

3. Disconnect the old faucet

Once the water supply is turned off, you can disconnect the old faucet. Start by disconnecting the water supply lines from the faucet. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nuts that hold the water supply lines to the faucet. Once the water supply lines are disconnected, you can remove the faucet from the sink. To do this, loosen the nuts that hold the faucet in place from underneath the sink. Once the nuts are loose, you can lift the faucet up and off the sink.

4. Clean the sink

Once the old faucet is removed, you can clean the sink. Use a damp rag to wipe down the sink and remove any debris. You can also use a mild abrasive cleaner to remove any hard water deposits or stains.

5. Apply plumber's putty

Before you install the new faucet, you need to apply plumber's putty to the base of the faucet. Plumber's putty is a type of sealant that helps to create a watertight seal between the faucet and the sink. To apply plumber's putty, roll a small piece of putty into a rope and then place it around the base of the faucet. Use your fingers to smooth out the putty and create a seal.

6. Install the new faucet

Once the plumber's putty is in place, you can install the new faucet. Place the faucet on the sink and align the holes in the faucet with the holes in the sink. Thread the mounting nuts onto the bolts and tighten them until the faucet is secure. Once the faucet is secure, you can connect the water supply lines. To do this, hand-tighten the nuts that hold the water supply lines to the faucet. Then, use an adjustable wrench to tighten the nuts further. Be careful not to overtighten the nuts, as this could damage the water supply lines.

7. Turn on the water supply

Once the faucet is installed, you can turn on the water supply. Open the shutoff valves under the sink to turn on the water. Check for leaks around the base of the faucet and the water supply lines. If you find any leaks, tighten the nuts further until the leaks stop.

8. Test the faucet

Once the faucet is installed and there are no leaks, you can test the faucet. Turn on the faucet and check for leaks. Also, check to make sure that the water temperature is correct. If the water temperature is not correct, you may need to adjust the temperature setting on the water heater.

9. Enjoy your new faucet!

Replacing a bathroom sink faucet is a relatively simple plumbing project that can be completed in a few hours. By following these steps, you can replace your old faucet with a new one and enjoy a leak-free sink for years to come.
