How To Repair Sink Faucet
A leaky faucet is a common household problem that can be easily fixed with a few simple tools. Follow these steps to repair a sink faucet.
1. Gather your tools
- Adjustable wrench or pliers
- Flathead screwdriver
- Philips screwdriver
- Faucet repair kit (if necessary)
2. Turn off the water supply
- Locate the shut-off valves under the sink and turn them clockwise to close them. If there are no shut-off valves, you will need to turn off the main water supply to your home.
3. Remove the aerator
- The aerator is a small screen attached to the end of the faucet spout. Use a wrench or pliers to unscrew the aerator.
4. Remove the handle
- Locate the set screw on the handle and loosen it with a screwdriver. Pull the handle straight up to remove it.
5. Remove the cartridge or stem
- Use a wrench or pliers to loosen the packing nut around the cartridge or stem and pull it out. If the cartridge or stem is stuck, you may need to use a faucet repair kit to remove it.
6. Inspect the cartridge or stem
- Look for any signs of damage or wear. If the cartridge or stem is damaged, it will need to be replaced.
7. Reassemble the faucet
- If the cartridge or stem is not damaged, reassemble the faucet in the reverse order of disassembly. Be sure to tighten all of the nuts and screws securely.
8. Turn on the water supply
- Open the shut-off valves under the sink or turn on the main water supply to your home.
9. Check for leaks
- Turn on the faucet and check for any leaks. If you see any leaks, tighten the nuts and screws until the leak stops.
