How To Take A Sink Faucet Off

A leaky faucet can waste a lot of water and increase your water bill. If you’re handy with tools, you can save money by repairing the faucet yourself. Here are the steps on how to take a sink faucet off:

1. Gather Your Tools

You will need the following tools:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Phillips head screwdriver
  • Flat head screwdriver
  • Bucket
  • Rags

2. Turn Off the Water Supply

Locate the shut-off valves under the sink. There will be two valves, one for the hot water and one for the cold water. Turn both valves clockwise to turn off the water supply.

3. Open the Faucet

Open the faucet to release any remaining water in the lines.

4. Disconnect the Supply Lines

Use the adjustable wrench to disconnect the supply lines from the faucet. The supply lines are the flexible hoses that connect the faucet to the shut-off valves.

5. Remove the Faucet Handle

Use the Phillips head screwdriver to remove the screws that hold the faucet handle in place. Once the screws are removed, pull the handle straight up to remove it.

6. Remove the Escutcheon Plate

The escutcheon plate is the decorative plate that covers the base of the faucet. Use the flat head screwdriver to pry the escutcheon plate off.

7. Remove the Mounting Nuts

Use the adjustable wrench to remove the mounting nuts that hold the faucet in place. There will be two mounting nuts, one on each side of the faucet.

8. Pull the Faucet Out

Once the mounting nuts are removed, pull the faucet straight up to remove it from the sink.

9. Clean the Sink

Use the rags to clean the sink. Remove any old sealant or debris.

10. Install the New Faucet

Follow the steps in reverse order to install the new faucet.

Tips

  • If you are not comfortable working with plumbing, it is best to call a plumber.
  • Be careful not to overtighten the mounting nuts.
  • Apply a thin bead of sealant around the base of the faucet before installing it.
  • Test the faucet for leaks before you turn on the water supply.
