How to Change Out a Sink
Replacing a sink is a relatively simple plumbing project that can be completed in a few hours. By following these steps, you can save yourself the cost of hiring a plumber and have a new sink installed in no time.
Tools and Materials
- New sink
- Wrench
- Pliers
- Putty knife
- Caulk gun
- Caulk
- Plumber's putty
- Faucet
- Strainer
- Shut-off valves (optional)
Step 1: Shut Off the Water Supply
Before you begin, turn off the water supply to the sink. There should be two shut-off valves located under the sink, one for the hot water and one for the cold water. If there are no shut-off valves, you will need to turn off the main water supply to your home.
Step 2: Disconnect the Faucet
Use a wrench to disconnect the water supply lines from the faucet. Then, use pliers to disconnect the faucet from the sink.
Step 3: Remove the Old Sink
Use a putty knife to cut away the old caulk around the sink. Then, carefully lift the sink out of the countertop.
Step 4: Clean the Countertop
Use a damp cloth to clean the countertop where the old sink was installed. Remove any old caulk or debris.
Step 5: Apply Plumber's Putty
Roll out a rope of plumber's putty and apply it to the underside of the new sink. The putty should form a seal between the sink and the countertop.
Step 6: Install the New Sink
Carefully place the new sink into the countertop. Press down on the sink to ensure that the putty forms a good seal.
Step 7: Reconnect the Faucet
Connect the water supply lines to the faucet. Then, reconnect the faucet to the sink.
Step 8: Caulk the Sink
Apply a bead of caulk around the edge of the sink where it meets the countertop. Smooth the caulk with your finger or a caulk tool.
Step 9: Install the Strainer
Place the strainer over the drain hole in the sink. Secure the strainer with the nuts that came with the sink.
Step 10: Turn on the Water Supply
Turn on the shut-off valves under the sink or the main water supply to your home. Check for leaks around the sink and faucet.
