Fix Leaking Sink Drain Pipe

A leaking sink drain pipe can be a nuisance and cause water damage to your home. Fortunately, it's a relatively easy problem to fix yourself with a few tools and materials.

Materials You'll Need:

Adjustable wrench or pliers
Bucket or bowl
Rags or paper towels
Plumber's putty or Teflon tape
New washer (if necessary)

Steps to Fix the Leak:

Turn off the water supply to the sink: Locate the shut-off valves under the sink and turn them clockwise to close them.
Place a bucket or bowl under the drain: This will catch any water that leaks out while you're working.
Disconnect the drain pipe: Use an adjustable wrench or pliers to loosen the nuts that connect the drain pipe to the sink and trap. Remove the drain pipe and inspect it for any damage or clogs.
Check the washer: The washer is a rubber seal that sits between the drain pipe and the sink or trap. If the washer is worn or damaged, it can cause a leak. Replace the washer with a new one if necessary.
Apply plumber's putty or Teflon tape: If there is no washer or if the washer didn't stop the leak, apply a layer of plumber's putty or Teflon tape to the threads of the drain pipe. This will help to create a watertight seal.
Reinstall the drain pipe: Thread the drain pipe back into the sink or trap and tighten the nuts hand-tight. Use the wrench or pliers to further tighten the nuts, but be careful not to overtighten them.
Turn on the water supply and check for leaks: Slowly turn the shut-off valves counterclockwise to turn on the water. Check the drain pipe and connections for any leaks. If you see any leaks, tighten the nuts further or reapply plumber's putty or Teflon tape as necessary.
