Food Disposal Sink Not Working

A garbage disposal is a convenient kitchen appliance that helps to keep your sink and drains clear of food debris. However, like any other appliance, garbage disposals can sometimes malfunction. If your garbage disposal is not working, there are a few things you can check to try to fix the problem.

1. Check the power.

The first thing you should check is whether or not the garbage disposal is getting power. Make sure that the power cord is plugged into an outlet and that the circuit breaker or fuse for the garbage disposal is not tripped or blown.

2. Reset the garbage disposal.

If the garbage disposal is getting power, the next thing you should try is to reset it. Most garbage disposals have a reset button located on the bottom of the unit. Press and hold the reset button for a few seconds, then release it. The garbage disposal should now reset and start working again.

3. Clear the drain.

If the garbage disposal is still not working, the next thing you should check is the drain. Food debris can sometimes clog the drain and prevent the garbage disposal from working properly. Use a drain snake or a pair of pliers to remove any debris that may be clogging the drain.

4. Inspect the impeller.

The impeller is the part of the garbage disposal that grinds up food debris. If the impeller is damaged or jammed, the garbage disposal will not work properly. To inspect the impeller, remove the splash guard from the top of the garbage disposal and look inside. If the impeller is damaged or jammed, you will need to replace it.

5. Call a plumber.

If you have tried all of the above steps and the garbage disposal is still not working, you should call a plumber. A plumber will be able to diagnose the problem and repair or replace the garbage disposal as needed.

Here are some additional tips for keeping your garbage disposal in good working condition:

Do not put grease, oil, or fat down the garbage disposal.
Do not put hard objects, such as bones or metal, down the garbage disposal.
Run the garbage disposal with cold water for a few seconds after each use.
Use a garbage disposal cleaner once a week to help keep the unit clean and free of odors.
