George Sink Charleston South Carolina

George Sink Jr. was born in Charleston, South Carolina, on October 20, 1925. He was the son of George Sink Sr. and Mary Jane Sink and was the youngest of nine children. Sink attended public schools in Charleston, graduating from Burke High School in 1944. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Navy, serving during World War II as a member of the Seabees.

After the war, Sink returned to Charleston and worked as a carpenter while attending night school at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. He graduated from The Citadel in 1950 with a degree in engineering and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the United States Army. Sink served in the Army during the Korean War, attaining the rank of captain before being discharged in 1953.

After leaving the Army, Sink returned to Charleston and began working in the construction industry. In 1956, he founded his own construction company, George Sink, Jr., Inc. The company initially specialized in residential construction but later expanded to include commercial and industrial projects. Under Sink's leadership, the company grew to become one of the largest construction firms in South Carolina.

In addition to his business career, Sink was active in civic and philanthropic activities in Charleston. He was a member of the Charleston County Chamber of Commerce, the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, and the National Association of Home Builders. Sink also served on the board of directors of several local organizations, including the Charleston Boys Club, the United Way of Charleston County, and the Coastal Carolina Fair.

Sink was a lifelong supporter of The Citadel and was a member of the school's board of visitors. He was also a major donor to the construction of the George Sink Jr. Athletic Center on The Citadel campus. Sink was inducted into the South Carolina Business Hall of Fame in 1994 and the Charleston Business Hall of Fame in 2000.

George Sink Jr. died in Charleston on January 1, 2019, at the age of 93. He was survived by his wife, three children, and seven grandchildren.

George Sink was a successful businessman, a dedicated civic leader, and a generous philanthropist. He made significant contributions to his community and will be remembered for his leadership and generosity.
