Hooking Up Bathroom Sink Drain

Installing a bathroom sink drain is a relatively simple plumbing project that can be completed in a few hours. By following these step-by-step instructions, you can easily connect the drain to your sink and ensure that it functions properly.

Materials Needed:

  • Sink drain assembly
  • Putty knife
  • Plumber's putty
  • Wrench
  • Slip joint pliers

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Remove the Old Drain: Start by placing a bucket or bowl under the sink to catch any water that may drain out. Use a putty knife to carefully remove the old plumber's putty around the base of the drain. Grip the drain assembly with slip joint pliers and unscrew it counterclockwise from the sink.

2. Apply Plumber's Putty: Roll a small amount of plumber's putty into a rope and place it around the base of the new drain assembly. Press the putty firmly into the grooves or ridges on the drain assembly to create a watertight seal.

3. Install the Drain Assembly: Insert the new drain assembly into the drain hole in the sink. Carefully align the drain assembly and hand-tighten it into place. Use a wrench to further tighten the drain assembly, but do not overtighten.

4. Connect the P-Trap: Attach the P-trap to the bottom of the drain assembly by hand-tightening the nuts. Use the wrench to further tighten the nuts, ensuring they are snug but not overtightened.

5. Connect to the Drainpipe: Connect the end of the P-trap to the drainpipe using a slip nut. Tighten the slip nut with the wrench. If the drainpipe is not the correct size, you may need to use an adapter or extension.

6. Test the Drain: Turn on the water and let it run into the sink. Check for leaks around the drain assembly, P-trap, and drainpipe connections. If you notice any leaks, tighten the connections as needed.

Tips:

  • Use a flashlight to inspect the underside of the sink for leaks.
  • Apply petroleum jelly or a silicone-based lubricant to the rubber washer on the drain assembly to prevent it from sticking.
  • If the drain is clogged, remove the drain stopper and use a drain snake or plunger to clear the blockage.
  • Regularly clean the drain with a drain cleaner to prevent buildup and clogs.
