How To Connect A Sink Drain Pipe

Installing a new sink is a relatively simple plumbing project that can be completed in a few hours. One of the most important steps is connecting the drain pipe. If the drain pipe is not connected properly, it can leak water and cause damage to your home.

There are a few different ways to connect a sink drain pipe, but the most common method is to use a slip joint nut. A slip joint nut is a type of fitting that has a tapered end that fits into the drainpipe. The other end of the slip joint nut has a threaded end that connects to the drain flange on the sink.

To connect a sink drain pipe using a slip joint nut, you will need the following tools and materials:

Adjustable wrench
Plumber's putty
Slip joint nut
Drain flange

Once you have gathered your tools and materials, you can begin the process of connecting the sink drain pipe.

Step 1: Prepare the drainpipe

The first step is to prepare the drainpipe. To do this, cut the pipe to the desired length using a hacksaw. The pipe should be long enough to reach the drain flange on the sink, but not so long that it is difficult to work with.

Once the pipe is cut to the desired length, apply a bead of plumber's putty to the tapered end of the slip joint nut. The plumber's putty will help to create a watertight seal between the slip joint nut and the drainpipe.

Step 2: Insert the slip joint nut into the drainpipe

Once the plumber's putty has been applied, insert the tapered end of the slip joint nut into the drainpipe. The slip joint nut should fit snugly into the pipe.

Step 3: Tighten the slip joint nut

Once the slip joint nut is in place, tighten it by hand. Once the nut is hand-tight, use an adjustable wrench to tighten it further. Be careful not to overtighten the nut, as this can damage the pipe.

Step 4: Install the drain flange

The next step is to install the drain flange on the sink. To do this, apply a bead of plumber's putty to the underside of the drain flange. Once the plumber's putty has been applied, place the drain flange over the drain hole in the sink.

Once the drain flange is in place, tighten the screws that hold it in place. Be careful not to overtighten the screws, as this can crack the sink.

Step 5: Connect the drainpipe to the drain flange

The final step is to connect the drainpipe to the drain flange. To do this, insert the threaded end of the slip joint nut into the drain flange. Once the slip joint nut is in place, tighten it by hand. Once the nut is hand-tight, use an adjustable wrench to tighten it further.

Be careful not to overtighten the nut, as this can damage the drainpipe or the drain flange.

Once the drainpipe is connected to the drain flange, your sink is ready to use.
