How To Fix Sink Faucet Drip

A dripping sink faucet is a common household annoyance that can waste water and increase your water bill. Fortunately, it is usually a relatively easy problem to fix. Here are the steps on how to fix a dripping sink faucet:

1. Gather your tools

Before you start, you will need to gather a few tools. These include:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Phillips screwdriver
  • Flathead screwdriver
  • New faucet washer (if necessary)
  • Plumber's putty (if necessary)

2. Turn off the water supply

The first step is to turn off the water supply to the faucet. There are usually two shut-off valves under the sink, one for the hot water and one for the cold water. Turn both valves clockwise to shut off the water.

3. Remove the aerator

The aerator is the small, screen-like attachment at the end of the faucet spout. It helps to reduce splashing and aerate the water. To remove the aerator, unscrew it by hand or use a wrench.

4. Remove the handle

Once the aerator is removed, you will need to remove the handle. To do this, use a screwdriver to remove the screw that is holding the handle in place. Once the screw is removed, pull the handle straight up to remove it.

5. Remove the cartridge

The cartridge is the part of the faucet that controls the flow of water. To remove the cartridge, use a wrench to loosen the nut that is holding it in place. Once the nut is loose, pull the cartridge straight up to remove it.

6. Replace the washer

If the washer is damaged or worn, it will need to be replaced. To do this, simply remove the old washer and replace it with a new one. Make sure that the new washer is the same size and shape as the old one.

7. Reassemble the faucet

Once the washer has been replaced, reassemble the faucet in the reverse order of disassembly. First, insert the cartridge into the faucet body and tighten the nut. Then, attach the handle to the cartridge and tighten the screw. Finally, screw on the aerator.

8. Turn on the water supply

Once the faucet is reassembled, turn on the water supply and check for leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the nuts or screws that are holding the faucet in place.

Tips

Here are a few tips for fixing a dripping sink faucet:

  • If you are not comfortable working on plumbing, it is best to call a plumber.
  • Before you start, make sure that you have all of the necessary tools.
  • Follow the steps carefully and do not overtighten any of the nuts or screws.
  • If you are replacing the washer, make sure that the new washer is the same size and shape as the old one.
  • Once the faucet is reassembled, check for leaks before you turn on the water supply.
