How To Install A New Kitchen Sink Drain

Replacing a kitchen sink drain is a simple plumbing repair that can be completed in a few hours. By following these step-by-step instructions, you can save yourself the cost of hiring a plumber.

Adjustable wrench
Plumber's putty
New kitchen sink drain
Bucket

Step 1: Turn Off the Water Supply

Before you begin, turn off the water supply to your kitchen sink. There are usually two shutoff valves located under the sink. One valve controls the hot water supply and the other controls the cold water supply. Turn both valves clockwise to the closed position.

Step 2: Remove the Old Drain

Place a bucket under the sink to catch any water that may leak out. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the nuts that hold the old drain in place. Once the nuts are loose, you can remove the drain by hand.

Step 3: Clean the Drain Hole

Once the old drain is removed, use a rag to clean the drain hole. Remove any debris or old plumber's putty that may be stuck to the hole.

Step 4: Apply Plumber's Putty

Roll a small amount of plumber's putty into a ball. Place the ball of putty in the center of the drain hole. Use your fingers to press the putty into the hole until it forms a seal.

Insert the new drain into the drain hole. Tighten the nuts that hold the drain in place. Be sure not to overtighten the nuts, as this can damage the drain.
