How To Seal Sink Drain Pipe
A leaky sink drain pipe can be a major inconvenience, causing water damage to your cabinets and floors. Fortunately, it is a relatively easy fix that you can do yourself with a few simple tools and materials. Here are the steps on how to seal a sink drain pipe:
Step 1: Gather Your Materials
You will need the following materials to seal a sink drain pipe:
- Plumber's putty
- Adjustable wrench
- Putty knife
- Clean rag
Step 2: Turn Off the Water Supply
Before you begin working on the drain pipe, you need to turn off the water supply to the sink. This will prevent water from spraying out of the pipe when you remove the old seal.
Step 3: Remove the Old Seal
Use the adjustable wrench to loosen the slip nut that holds the drainpipe in place. Once the nut is loose, you can pull the drainpipe off of the sink drain. The old seal will be visible around the base of the drainpipe.
Use the putty knife to carefully remove the old seal. Be careful not to damage the drainpipe or the sink.
Step 4: Apply New Plumber's Putty
Roll a small piece of plumber's putty into a ball. Place the ball of putty in the center of the drainpipe flange.
Use your fingers to spread the putty evenly around the flange. The putty should be about 1/4 inch thick.
Step 5: Reattach the Drainpipe
Place the drainpipe back onto the sink drain. Tighten the slip nut using the adjustable wrench.
Do not overtighten the nut. You only need to tighten it enough to create a watertight seal.
Step 6: Turn On the Water Supply
Turn on the water supply to the sink and check for leaks.
Once you are sure that there are no leaks, you can finish up by wiping away any excess putty with a clean rag.
