Install Bathroom Sink Drain Pipe

Installing a bathroom sink drain pipe is a relatively straightforward task that can be completed in a few hours. By following these steps, you can ensure that your sink drain is properly installed and functioning correctly.

Materials Needed:

  • Drain pipe
  • Slip nut
  • Washer
  • Pliers
  • Wrench
  • Bucket
  • Putty knife
  • Plumber's putty

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Remove the Old Drain Pipe: If you are replacing an existing drain pipe, start by removing the old one. Place a bucket under the sink to catch any water that may drain out. Loosen the slip nut that connects the drain pipe to the sink using pliers. Once the slip nut is loose, you can remove the old drain pipe.

2. Clean the Drain Hole: Once the old drain pipe is removed, clean the drain hole thoroughly. Remove any debris or old putty from the hole using a putty knife. This will ensure that the new drain pipe will fit properly.

3. Apply Plumber's Putty: Roll a small amount of plumber's putty into a rope and place it around the base of the new drain pipe. The putty will help to seal the drain hole and prevent leaks.

4. Insert the Drain Pipe: Insert the new drain pipe into the drain hole. Make sure that the putty is evenly distributed around the base of the pipe.

5. Install the Slip Nut: Place the slip nut over the drain pipe and tighten it using pliers. Do not overtighten the slip nut, as this could damage the pipe.

6. Tighten the Washer: Place the washer over the slip nut and tighten it using a wrench. Again, do not overtighten the washer.

7. Run Water: Once the drain pipe is installed, turn on the water and check for leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the slip nut or washer further.

8. Clean Up: Wipe away any excess water or putty from the sink and surrounding area.

Tips:

  • Use a drain pipe that is the correct size for your sink.
  • Tighten the slip nut and washer securely, but avoid overtightening.
  • If you are not comfortable installing the drain pipe yourself, consult a plumber.
  • Regularly inspect your drain pipe for leaks and tighten any loose connections as needed.
