Installing A Garburator In A Double Sink

Installing a garbage disposal in a double sink can be a bit more challenging than installing one in a single sink, but it is still a relatively straightforward project that can be completed in a few hours. The most important thing is to make sure that you have the right tools and materials and that you follow the instructions carefully.

Tools and Materials

To install a garbage disposal in a double sink, you will need the following tools and materials:

  • Garbage disposal
  • Sink flange
  • Mounting bracket
  • Putty knife
  • Adjustable wrench
  • Screwdriver
  • Electrical tape
  • Plumber's putty

Instructions

Once you have gathered all of the necessary tools and materials, you can begin the installation process.

  1. Turn off the water supply to the sink. To do this, locate the shut-off valves under the sink and turn them clockwise until the water stops flowing.
  2. Disconnect the drain pipes from the old disposal. To do this, loosen the nuts that hold the pipes to the disposal with an adjustable wrench. Once the nuts are loose, you can pull the pipes off of the disposal.
  3. Remove the old disposal. To do this, loosen the mounting bolts that hold the disposal to the sink with a screwdriver. Once the bolts are loose, you can lift the disposal out of the sink.
  4. Apply plumber's putty to the sink flange. The sink flange is the part of the disposal that fits against the underside of the sink. Apply a bead of plumber's putty around the outside edge of the flange.
  5. Place the sink flange in the sink. Align the flange with the drain hole in the sink and press it into place. The plumber's putty will help to seal the flange against the sink.
  6. Connect the drain pipes to the new disposal. To do this, insert the pipes into the disposal and tighten the nuts with an adjustable wrench.
  7. Mount the disposal to the sink. To do this, insert the bolts through the holes in the mounting bracket and tighten them with a screwdriver.
  8. Connect the electrical wires to the disposal. To do this, match the wires on the disposal to the wires in the electrical junction box and connect them with electrical tape.
  9. Turn on the water supply to the sink and check for leaks. If there are any leaks, tighten the nuts on the drain pipes until the leaks stop.

Once you have completed these steps, your new garbage disposal will be installed and ready to use.
