Installing a Sink P Trap

A P-trap is a type of plumbing fixture that is installed under a sink to prevent sewer gases from entering the home. It is made up of a curved pipe that forms the shape of the letter "P". The bottom of the trap is connected to the drainpipe, and the top is connected to the sink. When water flows down the drain, it fills the trap and creates a barrier that prevents sewer gases from escaping.

Installing a sink P-trap is a relatively simple task that can be completed in a few minutes. However, it is important to follow the instructions carefully to ensure that the trap is installed correctly and is functioning properly.

Tools and materials needed:

P-trap
Slip joint pliers
Adjustable wrench
Plumber's putty
Teflon tape

Instructions:

Turn off the water supply to the sink.
Place a bucket under the sink to catch any water that may leak out when you remove the old P-trap.
Use the slip joint pliers to loosen the nuts that hold the old P-trap in place. Do not overtighten the nuts, as this can damage the trap.
Remove the old P-trap and clean the mating surfaces of the drainpipe and the sink.
Apply a thin layer of plumber's putty to the mating surface of the drainpipe.
Place the new P-trap over the drainpipe and tighten the nuts by hand.
Use the adjustable wrench to further tighten the nuts. Do not overtighten the nuts.
Apply Teflon tape to the threads of the sink tailpiece.
Screw the sink tailpiece into the top of the P-trap.
Turn on the water supply and check for leaks.

Tips:

If you are installing a new sink, it is a good idea to install the P-trap before you install the sink.
Make sure that the P-trap is installed with the outlet facing down.
Do not overtighten the nuts on the P-trap. This can damage the trap.
