Kitchen Sink Faucet Washer Replacement
A leaky faucet is annoying, but it's also a waste of water and money. If you're handy, you can save yourself some time and money by replacing the washer yourself. Here's a step-by-step guide on how to replace a kitchen sink faucet washer.
Materials You'll Need
- Replacement washer (size and type will vary depending on your faucet)
- Adjustable wrench
- Phillips head screwdriver
- Flat head screwdriver
- Bucket or bowl to catch water
- Rags or paper towels
Instructions
1. Turn off the water supply. There are usually two shut-off valves under the sink, one for the hot water and one for the cold water. Turn both valves clockwise to turn off the water supply.
2. Open the faucet to release any remaining water. This will help prevent water from spraying everywhere when you remove the faucet handle.
3. Remove the faucet handle. This is usually done by unscrewing the screw that holds the handle in place. The screw is usually located under a small cap on the top of the handle.
4. Remove the packing nut. The packing nut is the large nut that holds the faucet stem in place. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the packing nut and remove it.
5. Remove the faucet stem. The faucet stem is the part that the handle is attached to. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the faucet stem and remove it.
6. Remove the old washer. The washer is a small, rubber ring that sits on the end of the faucet stem. Use a flat head screwdriver to pry the old washer off the end of the stem.
7. Install the new washer. Place the new washer on the end of the faucet stem. Make sure that the washer is facing the correct direction.
8. Reassemble the faucet. Insert the faucet stem back into the faucet body and tighten the packing nut. Replace the faucet handle and screw it in place.
9. Turn on the water supply and check for leaks. Slowly turn on the hot and cold water valves under the sink. Check for any leaks around the faucet handle or the base of the faucet.
If there are no leaks, you're all set! You've successfully replaced the washer in your kitchen sink faucet.
