Plumbing Kitchen Sink With Disposal

Installing a kitchen sink with a garbage disposal is a common plumbing project that can be completed in a few hours with the right tools and materials. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you through the process:

Tools and Materials:

Before you begin, gather the following tools and materials:

  • Adjustable wrench
  • Plumber's putty
  • Basin wrench
  • Channel lock pliers
  • Garbage disposal unit
  • Dishwasher drain hose
  • New sink
  • Sink strainer
  • Teflon tape

Step 1: Remove the Old Sink and Disposal

Start by turning off the water supply to the sink. Disconnect the water supply lines and the dishwasher drain hose. Use a basin wrench to loosen the nuts holding the disposal in place and remove the disposal. Finally, remove the old sink.

Step 2: Prepare the New Sink and Disposal

Apply a bead of plumber's putty around the rim of the disposal flange. Insert the disposal into the sink hole and tighten the nuts. Connect the dishwasher drain hose to the disposal. Run a bead of silicone sealant around the edge of the sink and set the sink in place.

Step 3: Connect the Drain

Attach the sink strainer to the drain hole in the sink. Apply Teflon tape to the threads of the drainpipe and screw it into the strainer. Connect the other end of the drainpipe to the disposal's drain outlet.

Step 4: Connect the Water Supply

Connect the water supply lines to the hot and cold water valves under the sink. Use Teflon tape on the threads to ensure a watertight seal. Turn on the water supply and check for leaks.

Step 5: Test the Disposal

Turn on the disposal and run water into the sink. The disposal should grind up food scraps and send them down the drain. If the disposal is not working properly, check the power cord and reset button. If the problem persists, contact a plumber.

Tips:

  • When choosing a garbage disposal, consider the size of your household and the types of food you typically dispose of.
  • Never put metal objects, glass, or grease down the disposal.
  • Run cold water when using the disposal to help flush food scraps down the drain.
  • If the disposal becomes jammed, turn it off and clear the obstruction with a pair of tongs.
  • Regularly clean the disposal by grinding ice cubes or citrus peels.
