PVC Kitchen Sink Drain Plumbing
Installing a PVC kitchen sink drain is a relatively simple plumbing project that can be completed in a few hours. By following these step-by-step instructions, you can easily replace your old drain and get your sink functioning properly again.
Materials You Will Need:
- PVC pipe (1-1/2 inch diameter)
- PVC pipe cutter
- PVC primer
- PVC cement
- Slip joint nuts
- Sink drain strainer
- Plumber's putty
- Adjustable wrench
Step-by-Step Instructions:
1. Remove the Old Drain:Place a bucket under the sink to catch any water that may leak out. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the slip joint nuts that are holding the old drain in place. Once the nuts are loose, you can remove the old drain by pulling it straight up.
2. Clean the Drain Hole:Use a damp cloth to clean the drain hole in the sink. Remove any old plumber's putty or debris that may be present.
3. Apply Plumber's Putty:Roll a small amount of plumber's putty into a snake shape. Place the putty around the base of the new drain strainer, making sure to create a watertight seal.
4. Insert the Drain Strainer:Insert the drain strainer into the drain hole and press down firmly to secure it in place. The plumber's putty will help to create a watertight seal.
5. Cut and Assemble the PVC Pipe:- Measure and cut a length of PVC pipe that is long enough to reach from the drain strainer to the drainpipe in the wall.
- Apply PVC primer to the ends of the pipe and the inside of the slip joint nuts.
- Apply PVC cement to the ends of the pipe and the inside of the slip joint nuts.
- Push the slip joint nuts onto the ends of the pipe and tighten them by hand.
- Insert one end of the PVC pipe into the drain strainer.
- Tighten the slip joint nut that is holding the pipe in place.
- Insert the other end of the PVC pipe into the drainpipe in the wall.
- Tighten the slip joint nut that is holding the pipe in place.
Turn on the water and allow it to run through the sink. Check for any leaks around the drain strainer or the PVC pipe connections. If you find any leaks, tighten the slip joint nuts until the leaks stop.
Your new PVC kitchen sink drain is now installed and ready to use. By following these step-by-step instructions, you can easily replace your old drain and get your sink functioning properly again.
