Replace Bathroom Sink Drain Pipe

Safety Precautions:

Before starting any plumbing work, it's essential to take safety precautions. Ensure to turn off the water supply to the sink by closing the shut-off valves beneath the sink. Wear gloves and safety glasses to protect your hands and eyes from potential splashes.

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Remove the Old Drain Pipe:

Place a bucket under the sink to catch any water that may drain out. Use an adjustable wrench to loosen the slip nuts that connect the drain pipe to the sink drain flange and the P-trap. Once the slip nuts are loose, remove the old drain pipe.

2. Clean the Drain Flange:

Use a damp cloth to clean the sink drain flange and remove any debris or old plumber's putty. Ensure the surface is clean and free of dirt or grime before applying new putty.

3. Apply Plumber's Putty:

Roll a small piece of plumber's putty into a ball and shape it into a cone. Place the putty cone in the center of the drain flange and press it down firmly to create a seal. Smooth out the excess putty around the edges using your fingers.

4. Install the New Drain Pipe:

Insert the new drain pipe into the drain flange and hand-tighten the slip nut onto the flange. Use the adjustable wrench to further tighten the slip nut, but avoid overtightening it as it can damage the pipe or the flange.

5. Connect to the P-trap:

Attach the other end of the drain pipe to the P-trap by hand-tightening the slip nut. Again, use the adjustable wrench to further tighten the connection, ensuring a secure fit.

6. Apply Teflon Tape:

Wrap a few layers of Teflon tape around the threads of the drain pipe where it connects to the sink drain.

7. Reinstall the Drain Stopper:

Insert the drain stopper into the drain hole and tighten the set screw to secure it in place.

8. Test the Drain:

Turn on the water supply and run water into the sink. Check for any leaks around the connections. If there are no leaks, the drain pipe is successfully replaced.

Tips:

Use a flashlight to inspect the drain flange and P-trap for any damage or cracks before installing the new drain pipe.
