Sink And Dishwasher Not Draining

A clogged drain can be a major inconvenience. Not only is it unsightly, but it can also lead to a number of other problems, such as water damage and mold growth. If your sink or dishwasher is not draining properly, there are a few things you can do to try to fix the problem yourself before calling a plumber.

1. Check the P-trap

The P-trap is a U-shaped pipe that is located under the sink or dishwasher. It is designed to trap water and prevent sewer gases from entering the home. Over time, the P-trap can become clogged with hair, soap scum, and other debris. To clean the P-trap, simply remove the cleanout plug and use a plumber's snake to clear away any clogs.

2. Check the garbage disposal

If your sink has a garbage disposal, it is possible that the disposal is clogged. To check the garbage disposal, turn it on and run cold water down the drain. If the water does not drain properly, the disposal may be clogged. To clear a clogged garbage disposal, use a pair of tongs to remove any large objects that may be blocking the blades. You can also try pouring a cup of baking soda down the drain followed by a cup of vinegar. Let the mixture sit for a few minutes, then flush the drain with hot water.

3. Check the drain vent

The drain vent is a pipe that allows air to enter the drain system. If the drain vent is clogged, it can create a vacuum that prevents water from draining properly. To check the drain vent, go to the roof of your home and locate the vent pipe. The vent pipe should be open and unobstructed. If the vent pipe is clogged, you can clear it using a plumber's snake.

4. Call a plumber

If you have tried all of the above and your sink or dishwasher is still not draining properly, it is time to call a plumber. A plumber will be able to diagnose the problem and recommend the best course of action.

Here are some additional tips to help prevent your sink and dishwasher from clogging:

  • Dispose of food scraps in the trash, not the sink.
  • Run cold water down the drain after using the garbage disposal.
  • Clean the P-trap regularly.
  • Pour a cup of baking soda down the drain followed by a cup of vinegar once a month to help keep the drains clear.
