Sink and Float Lesson Plan

Grade Level: Kindergarten - 2nd Grade

Subject: Science

Topic: Floating and Sinking

Objectives:

  • Students will be able to identify objects that sink and float.
  • Students will be able to explain why some objects sink and others float.
  • Students will be able to make predictions about whether an object will sink or float.

Materials:

  • A variety of objects, such as a boat, a rock, a ball, a piece of wood, a piece of metal, and a piece of styrofoam
  • A large tub or bucket of water
  • A whiteboard or chart paper
  • Markers

Procedure:

  1. Begin by asking students what they think will happen if they put different objects in water. Will they sink or float?
  2. Have students make predictions about each object.
  3. Next, have students test their predictions by placing the objects in the water.
  4. As students test each object, ask them to observe what happens. Does it sink or float?
  5. After students have tested all of the objects, discuss the results.
  6. Explain to students that objects that are denser than water will sink, while objects that are less dense than water will float.
  7. Finally, have students create a chart or diagram to sort the objects into two categories: sinkers and floaters.
  8. Assessment:

To assess student learning, you can use the following methods:

    • Observe students as they test the objects to see if they can identify which objects sink and which objects float.
    • Ask students to explain why some objects sink and others float.
    • Have students create a chart or diagram to sort the objects into two categories: sinkers and floaters.

    Differentiation:

For students who are struggling, you can provide them with more support. For example, you can help them identify the objects that are denser than water and the objects that are less dense than water. You can also help them create a chart or diagram to sort the objects into two categories: sinkers and floaters.

For students who are ahead, you can challenge them to research different types of boats and how they float. You can also ask them to design and build a boat that will float a certain amount of weight.
