Where Did the Indianapolis Sink?

The USS Indianapolis (CA-35) was a Portland-class heavy cruiser of the United States Navy that was sunk by the Japanese submarine I-58 on July 30, 1945, in the Philippine Sea. The sinking of the Indianapolis resulted in the loss of 883 crew members, the largest single-ship loss of life in the history of the US Navy. Only 316 of the ship's 1,196 crew members survived.

The Indianapolis was commissioned in 1932 and served in the Pacific during World War II. The ship was part of the task force that conducted the Doolittle Raid on Japan in April 1942. The Indianapolis also participated in the Battle of Midway in June 1942 and the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June 1944.

In July 1945, the Indianapolis was assigned to deliver parts of the atomic bomb to Tinian Island. The ship left San Francisco on July 16 and arrived at Tinian on July 26. After unloading the bomb parts, the Indianapolis was ordered to proceed to Leyte Gulf in the Philippines.

On July 30, 1945, the Indianapolis was steaming towards Leyte Gulf when it was struck by two torpedoes from the Japanese submarine I-58. The ship sank in 12 minutes. The survivors of the sinking were left in the water for four days before they were rescued by the destroyer USS Bassett.

The sinking of the Indianapolis was a tragedy that could have been avoided. The ship was not equipped with radar and was not zigzagging, which made it an easy target for the Japanese submarine. The Navy also failed to provide adequate search and rescue efforts for the survivors.

The sinking of the Indianapolis remains one of the most tragic events in the history of the US Navy. The ship's loss and the loss of life of its crew are a reminder of the dangers of war and the importance of being prepared.
