The RMS Titanic was a British passenger liner that sank in the North Atlantic Ocean on the night of April 14–15, 1912, after striking an iceberg during her maiden voyage from Southampton to New York City. There were an estimated 2,224 people on board, and more than 1,500 died, making it one of the deadliest commercial peacetime maritime disasters in modern history.

The wreck of the Titanic lies at a depth of about 12,500 feet (3,800 m) on the seabed, about 370 miles (600 km) south-southeast of the coast of Newfoundland. The wreck was first discovered in 1985 by a joint Franco-American expedition led by Robert Ballard and Jean-Louis Michel. On the night of April 14, 1912, the Titanic struck an iceberg at 11:40 p.m. ship's time. The collision caused five of the ship's sixteen watertight compartments to flood. The Titanic sank two hours and forty minutes later, at 2:20 a.m. ship's time.

The sinking of the Titanic was a major maritime disaster. It led to the implementation of new safety regulations for passenger ships, including the requirement for lifeboats for all passengers and crew.

The wreck of the Titanic is a popular tourist destination. In 1987, the wreck was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

In 2012, James Cameron directed a 3D film about the sinking of the Titanic. The film, which starred Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, won 11 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Director.
